A young street magician is left to take care of his little sister after his mother's passing and turns to drug dealing in the Los Angeles party scene to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets into trouble with his supplier, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to rely on both his sleight of hand and brilliant mind to save her。现年32岁的瘦弱女子爱丽丝·伊万斯（布莱特妮·墨菲 Brittany Murphy 饰）是一个小有名气的编剧，由于当年和男友的纷争，造成爱丽丝神经容易紧张，无法专心工作。眼看截稿日期临近，而且听闻男友出狱，于是她跑到偏远乡村，将自己隔绝在一幢无人别墅，希望能够静心完成作品。 然而事与愿违，空空荡荡的别墅反令爱丽丝的心愈加紧张。诡异的梦、自动打开的门、渗人的哭声以及一串神秘的脚印，仿佛都在昭示一个未知生命体的存在。爱丽丝开始有意识探究这幢房子的秘密，她找到前主人戴维留在这里的一卷录影带，不知不觉，她便融入戴维夫妇的世界中。孰真孰假，亦真亦幻，概莫能辨……。
