早年丧妻的许茂（李纬 饰）生养了九个女儿。大女儿在文革中含冤离世。大队副书记郑百如（张连文 饰）强行与四姑娘秀云（李秀明 饰）结合，后离婚。后来秀云因拒绝三姑娘（张金玲 饰）为其说妥的婚事而引起父亲和众姐妹不满，其原因是她非常同情大姐夫金东水（杨在葆 饰）的遭遇。县里工作组进村搞整顿，郑百如趁机夜闯秀云小屋被赶走，郑脑羞成怒，散布秀云与金东水的流言蜚语，逼秀云投河自尽，幸而被救。经调查，工作组停了郑百如的职，恢复了金东水的工作，许老汉和众姐妹也终于理解了秀云的苦衷。1976年初，全国掀起了“反击右倾翻案风”运动，刚刚松绑的政策又收紧了，下一步该怎么走呢......。A group of young offenders are delivered to an island for a week of character building exercises after one of their fellow inmates commits suicide..
